Biography

Mr. Arun Chawla is the Director General of Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) and Principal Advisor, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). He is the Former Director General, FICCI.

Mr. Chawla is a post-Graduate with a degree in Law from the University of Delhi. He has over 38 years of work experience, most of which has been gained in the FICCI & ICA. Mr. Chawla also holds a Certificate of Training on Commercial Mediation & Negotiation issued by the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.

ICA, an apex Arbitral Institution of India and a quasi-judicial body was established in 1965 with the Government of India and FICCI amongst others as its founding members. ICA is able to provide world class arbitrations, international and domestic due to its modern well-equipped infrastructure and networks. As an organisation it has also been deeply involved in development of Arbitration Law and Policy including the ongoing reforms to promote awareness and provide technical knowledge in Arbitration laws and Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) procedure. 

Mr. Chawla, as the head of ICA has promoted a healthy picture of India’s ADR practice. This is also achieved by organizing international Conferences and facilitation of international arbitrations by reciprocal cooperation arrangements and MoUs with major arbitral institutions all over the world. Mr. Chawla was also a member of the High-Level Committee for ‘Making India Hub of Arbitration’ under the Chairmanship of Justice B.N. Srikrishna, Retired Judge, Supreme Court of India constituted by the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice in January 2017.

Mr. Chawla with more than a decade of corporate experience and a long stint in FICCI has witnessed the unfolding of economic reforms in India through the prism of business and industry and has steadfastly worked to deepen the reform process across sectors and states. 

He has travelled extensively worldwide as a part of business & ministerial delegations to showcase the economic opportunities in India to potential investors and also educate them about the smooth and simple mechanisms of dispute settlements so as to create altruism in the field of domestic and international businesses. This has contributed immensely towards building strong partnerships in many key areas of economy.

He serves as a member of several Government constituted committees at the Central and State levels including the following:

  • Member of the Board of Trustees for the Provident Fund, chaired by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Labour & Employment
  • Member of Governing Council of Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), chaired by the Hon’ble Vice President of India

He has been a speaker at many of the national and international Conferences, representing FICCI & ICA. 

Mr. Chawla is a prolific writer who has authored many articles for the national dailies of India and reputed magazines on legal, social, and political-economy issues.
